Let There Be Light edition by R Cooper Literature Fiction eBooks

In war-torn Europe of 1872, Karol and Hart devoted themselves to protecting England and the peace England maintained. Hart was a spy and bodyguard for Karol, a brilliant but hotheaded scientist. Their partnership was almost unstoppable... until Hart could no longer bear to see Karol in danger—or with other men—and seeing Hart repeatedly put his life on the line came to terrify Karol. Then a horrible accident separated them for what they believed would be forever.
Now the enemy's plan to kidnap Karol has Hart volunteering to guard him once again. Alone together with their fear and pain from the past might destroy them... or it might give them hope for a brighter future.

Please refer to the blurb for the adequate brief plot summary. I did not expect to find this gem, when I was deciding which one of the new releases by Dreamspinner press I want to read next, but I love historicals and AU historicals and this one sounded lovely so I bought it.It reminded me of another recent release by the same publisher in a sense, because here one can feel same claustrofobic mode, basically the action spans through 24 hours and the characters are stuck together, and oh my god the tension is so high that I felt that the room they were stuck in was ready to explode. I just cannot adequately describe how well it is written. Both Hart and Karol have a lot of history between them and misunderstandings and hurt, and desire and I am just amazed at how much I learn about Karol in such short novella. Interestingly, even though Hart is POV character, I felt that Karol, the brilliant scientist felt as more complex out of the pair.
I absolutely loved it... till the very end. Is there a page missing or is author expecting my imagination to supply the real ending???

Let There Be Light edition by R Cooper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
There was an amazing chemistry between the two characters in this book that was fairly visceral, knowing there was a history there that brought them together and, at the same time, tore them apart. It was deliciously aggravating because they were trying so hard to push each other away, yet the evidence was clear that they wanted nothing more than to draw closer. It was a clear and present danger for Hart and Karol to dredge up the past, and even more dangerous to consider the consequences of the circumstances that brought them together again after a three year separation.
Devotion to Queen and country is Hart's prime directive. Karol is a brilliant scientist and inventor who has become the equivalent of England's most valuable resource. Dedication to the safety and security of England is what brought the men together, and ultimately, part of what separated them. Now that Karol and the defenses of England herself have been threatened, Hart is once again sworn to do everything in his power to protect Karol. Or die trying.
Fighting or forging a connection--Hart and Karol did a bit of both before this story was done. And then it simply...ended...and I was the one who was frustrated, then, because there seems to be more story there and I want it all. Whether R. Cooper has a sequel planned for this one, though, I don't know. What I do know is that these men, the machines, and the world they live in seem far larger and more extraordinary than what I got to see in these 102 pages.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this story. Just don't expect a neatly tied up ending.

Victoria is Queen of England and hostilities rage in Europe as enemy states vie for supremacy. Technology is struggled over in a secret war of espionage and counter espionage. Karol, a brilliant but temperamental scientist, has been caught up in this war. Hart, an agent of Victoria, has been sent to protect him. But this is not a first meeting. The two have a long history of adventure, struggle and conflict. Old disputes between them re-emerge, but for the next few hours, the two must be together.
R. Cooper really excels in this tense psychological piece. She portrays two men, both tough in their own separate ways, circling around one another, fighting, playing games, calculating, joking, reminiscing, and admiring one another. If you are looking for a plot driven story you would do well to look elsewhere, but if you want to get into the minds of people, to see the complexity of their thoughts, and to feel their emotions, then this is the book for you.
The story covers a few short hours so the book is necessarily brief. Cooper keeps the characters moving around one another, skilfully revealing more and more of the truth so the reader is kept intrigued. This tale is never boring. The conversation between the two characters is filled with tension. We cannot help but wonder where things are going, who will 'win'?
The characters, as I say, are complex. Cooper has created to men that 'live'. There is nothing standard about either. Under less skilled hands this could have been a simple 'spy' and 'mad scientist' story (cardboard cut outs), but Cooper instead intrigues us, keeps us guessing as to history, actions and motivations.
Cooper's theme is the love/hate relationship that can develop between strong minded men. Pride keeps men separate, yet friendship, shared struggle, draws then together. This is no simple gay romance.
There is a sex scene in the story, but I would hardly call this book erotica. Cooper is more interested in the meeting of two minds than the mechanics of two bodies touching.
This story really intrigued me and I am happy to award it five stars.
Picked this up in my desperate search for quality steampunk (and for any LGBT-themed steampunk!) but was disappointed. The text is grammatically sound, but disorganized. One of the characters, Karol, is very unlikeable (I tend to enjoy the arrogant genius archetype, but it's just not done well here; it's one thing for the other characters to dislike him, and another thing entirely for the reader to do so!). I'm not entirely certain what the other protagonist, Hart, is really up to. Keep Karol safe, sure, but... then what? Check in on an old friend? Make peace with the past? Get laid? He has to have had another motive, or he could have sent someone much less high profile than himself to do the job, but I'm darned if I can figure out what it is. The entire story seems to revolve solely around UST, but I didn't like the characters enough to care about that, and so I didn't care about the story, either. Too bad.
Not my favorite R Cooper - this one was especially tortured and twisty. Interesting premise but required a lot of close attention and I'm still not sure I got aspects of it, nor that I will especially remember it.
